How The Plan Came About

In December of last year, I received an intriguing proposal inquiry from Oliver, a Canadian client. He briefly laid out his plan to propose to his girlfriend—a journey that would take them halfway across the world to Japan! I couldn't pass up this opportunity and managed to align my cherry blossom photography plans with his proposal at one of Japan's most beautiful locations, where Mt. Fuji stands majestically in the background. Capturing both peak cherry blossoms and the proposal presented a challenge, so I booked my flight two weeks before the event. Even with this buffer, timing proved difficult—I barely caught the cherry blossoms at their peak when I arrived in Tokyo.

The Proposal

Oliver's proposal plan was to capture the moment with the iconic Mt. Fuji in the background. Among the many Mt. Fuji viewpoints in Yamanashi, he chose Tenku no Torii ("Torii gate in the sky") as the perfect spot. Leading up to the day, Oliver and I monitored the Mt. Fuji forecast, which unfortunately didn't look promising. We had set aside 4-5 days in the Yamanashi area to allow for weather adjustments, but as our date approached, all days showed cloudy conditions with slim chances of seeing Mt. Fuji. We preferred a morning proposal to avoid crowds typical during afternoon and sunset hours.

The day before the proposal, Oliver reassured me that even if Mt. Fuji remained hidden, the moment itself was what truly mattered. On the morning of the proposal, I arrived early and was surprised to find I was the only tourist there except for two locals. I scouted the location and sent Oliver some final instructions. When the couple arrived at our designated spot, Oliver cleverly asked if I spoke English, pretending I was a stranger so Kiana wouldn't suspect anything. He asked if I could take their picture in front of the torii gate. I happily agreed and readied my camera. After saying a few heartfelt words to Kiana, Oliver dropped to one knee and proposed! Kiana was completely surprised—she never imagined being proposed to in Japan, especially during their first visit to the country.

After capturing more photos at Tenku no Torii, we headed to our second location: Oishi Park. Despite the early morning hour and Mt. Fuji being hidden behind clouds, the park was already filled with photographers. We walked along the lake until we found a quieter spot by a distinctive cherry blossom tree for some intimate portraits. We also took some walking shots along the boardwalk—one of my favorite photography spots in the park. We finished our session by the lake, creating some dynamic motion blur shots. This joyful proposal was a delight to document, and I would gladly do it all again. Congratulations to Oliver & Kiana on their engagement!

What To Know When Taking Professional Photographs At Tenku No Torii

To take photos with a professional camera at this shrine, you must purchase a 500 yen photo permit on site. This permit remains valid for one year. No permit is needed for smartphone photography. Note that tripods and drones are prohibited on the premises. You can find additional information on their official website.

How To Get To Tenku No Torii

From Kawaguchi Asama shrine, the hike to Tenku no Torii takes about 30 minutes on foot. If you have a rental car, you can drive all the way up, but be warned—the road is very narrow. Parking at the top is extremely limited, and shrine staff are now very strict about parking on the side of the road. For this proposal, however, I was able to drive my rental car to the top and park alongside the road without any issues.

For those using public transportation, the nearest bus stop is Kawaguchiko Post Office (河口局前), which is a 10-minute ride costing 310 yen from Kawaguchiko Station.

The site is open from sunrise to sunset.

The Future of Tenku No Torii

The Asama Shirataki Sakura Project is a long-term initiative to plant cherry blossoms around Tenku no Torii. These trees are expected to bloom around 2030. This addition will give tourists another compelling reason to visit this iconic location for the perfect shot combining the shrine, cherry blossoms, and Mt. Fuji in the background.

プランが出来るまで

天空の鳥居でのプロ写真撮影に関する注意事項
